DUBOIS: A growing but often unseen issue in the community is coming into focus as a new local organization works to address homelessness in the area.
During a recent appearance on Connect FM’s Contact Show, Giving Hope in DuBois founder Kim Mowry shared how the organization began and what she has discovered about the reality of homelessness locally.
Mowry explained that her awareness of the issue began only months ago after learning that more than 150 coats had been distributed—many to individuals experiencing homelessness.
“I was shocked,” Mowry said. “I said, you mean there are homeless people in our town?”
That moment led to a deeper understanding—and ultimately, action.
A Hidden Population in Plain Sight
For many longtime residents, homelessness in DuBois is not something easily recognized. However, Mowry said once people become aware, it becomes much more visible.
“If you see someone with a backpack… or riding a bicycle in the winter months carrying their belongings, that’s usually a sign that they’re homeless,” she explained.
While official counts have suggested smaller numbers, Mowry indicated the true population is likely much higher, noting that transient individuals and seasonal patterns make accurate tracking difficult.
Why People Become Homeless
According to Mowry, homelessness is driven by a combination of factors rather than a single cause.
“The number one reasons are mental illness, addiction, alcoholism, and financial crisis,” she said.
Rising costs of living have also made more individuals vulnerable, with some residents only one unexpected hardship away from losing stable housing.
Loss of Shelter and Limited Overnight Options
A major challenge facing the area is the loss of Haven House, previously the only homeless shelter in DuBois, which closed in August 2025 due to financial issues.
Currently, there are limited options for individuals seeking overnight shelter.
- The YMCA provides access to showers during operating hours
- The DuBois Public Library serves as a daytime warming center
- However, overnight shelter remains largely unavailable
Community Resources Stepping Up
Despite these challenges, several local organizations and churches are helping meet immediate needs:
- Rugged Cross Church offers free meals multiple Wednesdays each month
- Bethany Covenant Church provides meals on alternating Wednesdays
- Soul Platter Café serves meals to those in need
- Holy Spirit Parish also contributes meals periodically
Additionally, local businesses such as Sheetz have become informal safe spaces where individuals can stay warm if they are not causing disturbances.
Direct Outreach and Practical Support
Giving Hope in DuBois is currently focused on meeting immediate needs while working toward long-term solutions.
Efforts include:
- Backpack drives with essential supplies (socks, gloves, toiletries)
- Distribution of clothing and cold-weather gear
- Encouraging donations of gift cards for food and necessities
- Helping connect individuals to available services
Mowry emphasized that mobility is a key concern, noting individuals can only carry limited belongings, making practical and lightweight support especially important.
A Growing Volunteer Effort
The organization has quickly gained traction, with approximately 30 people attending meetings regularly.
Participants include:
- An attorney
- A pastor
- A mental health nurse
- Community volunteers
Some members have even taken direct action by preparing and distributing meals in the community.
A Faith-Driven Mission
Mowry described the organization’s work as deeply rooted in faith and compassion, referencing the Biblical call to serve those in need.
“When Christ was alive, who did he hang around with? … the rejects of our society,” she said.
She added that approaching individuals with kindness and dignity often leads to meaningful connections and openness.

A Call to Awareness
Mowry encourages residents to reflect on the realities faced by those without shelter—especially during harsh winter conditions.
“Think how you would feel if you were stuck out in the cold,” she said.
As awareness grows, Giving Hope in DuBois aims to bring the community together to address a problem that, until recently, many didn’t realize existed.
